Essentially a Take
Let's talk about X, Baby
Let's talk about X. Not the party drug. Not Elon Musk's political hate machine. And not your toxic former girlfriend, you know, the one that every unmarried man over 35 still introduces as his last roommate. This X is a football position. The X receiver lines up on the line of scrimmage, split wide, alone on the boundary with a cornerback in his chest and no help coming, and he has to win anyway. Mike Evans is the 49ers' X, and Evans is limping. So let's talk about X.
Monday night told you everything. Evans caught 3 balls for 94 yards against Washington, stretched his Achilles, and left.1 The offense left with him: 9 plays for 7 yards across the three drives that followed.2 I wrote yesterday that Mike Evans is the 49ers' fig leaf, and Monday night was the proof printed in real time. With him, this configuration of the 49ers is unstoppable on offense. Without him, Brock Purdy is throwing to Arena Football League All Stars…
At least the official word is reassuring. Kyle Shanahan said after the game that Evans' Achilles is intact, that it is the same tendinitis that bothered him all week, that no further testing is expected,3 and by Tuesday he was saying it is "not a long-term thing" and that he is hopeful Evans can play Sunday in Atlanta.4 Of course we always need to take the 49ers injury reports with a glass of water from the Dead Sea. But for now let's give Kyle some grace and believe him.
Tendinitis in a 33-year-old Achilles does not care about your word. It flares when it wants. The 49ers are 6-0 with a bye week coming and a Super Bowl window standing wide open, and the most important tendon in the building belongs to their only true and proven X wide receiver.
The X is not just the biggest receiver, the X is the one who lines up on the line, eats the jam at the snap, and wins anyway. Purdy needs a receiver who can handle press man coverage and who is nearly automatic on contested catches, the back shoulder throws and the third and 8 fades where the ball goes up and somebody has to own it. Before he tore his knee and went crazy that guy was Aiyuk. Now it's Mike Evans, and he is generationally good at that job. But now he's hurt, and the short to medium term of this season cannot be spent hoping his tendon behaves.
So the front office should go get one. I went through the league's X receivers and the X-capable ones this morning, and came up with a list of 64 of them, contracts included, and I will be honest with you, there aren't really any truly good realistic gettable options.
The full board: the top 64 X and X-capable receivers, with contract years (64)

Ranked by quality as an X option right now. Contract data from Spotrac and OverTheCap, checked October 20, 2026.
George Pickens is the best player of the bunch, a franchise tag receiver Dallas has ruled out signing long term.5 I also have serious questions about Pickens' character and motor and willingness to block, which is essential in a Shanahan scheme. But if we had Robin Williams in a Magic lamp, sim-sala-bim, he'd be the clear guy from a talent POV. Then there's Quentin Johnston who is eyebrow raising. He's relatively cheap and controlled through 2027, and the Chargers are 0-5,6 but he is a promise more than a player so far. Jauan Jennings is sitting in Minnesota on a one-year deal with one catch entering Week 4,7 and yes, that phone call writes its own headline, and we've been over this before, I still think the Vikings would need to pay the 49ers to take him. And then there's Brian Thomas Jr. who is still buried in Jacksonville behind receivers he outplayed as a rookie,8 but also full credit here: Jason Aponte talked me down off that idea, and he was right to. And while the 1,282-yard rookie year is real so is everything that has happened since (which is whole lot of mediocrity).
But if I truly ruled the world, the answer would be easy. The trade I would make is for Tee Higgins. I have never brought that up in this column, because it is unrealistic. Cincinnati has him through 20289 and has no reason on earth to move him. But since we are confessing things, there it is. Higgins is the dream. He is also a dream. And I want to point out there is an alternate universe where the 49ers never trade Deforest Buckner to Indy, and draft Higgins with the 31st pick in the 2020 draft.10
The real answer, I think now, is Jerry Jeudy.
Cleveland has already demoted him behind two rookies. He has 8 catches for 81 yards through five games on a team going nowhere, and reporting says the Browns are asking for a third or a fourth round pick for him.11 Jeudy is signed through 2027.12 And I have always suspected Kyle Shanahan liked Jeudy plenty during the draft process, because the route running is exactly the kind Shanahan falls for. Brian Peacock loved Jeudy in that 2020 draft process too, loved him out loud, and Peacock's receiver eye has earned the right to be cited in this column.
My price, as fake GM: I'd do it for a 2027 fifth or a 2028 fourth, or similar value, and I would negotiate from there and see where the best price lands. That is below Cleveland's ask, and it should be. You do not pay a seller's first number for a receiver the seller has benched. But you make the call, because the fit is real and the clock is realer.
The counterargument is patience. You are 6-0. Evans might play Sunday. Christian Kirk might get activated.13 De'Zhaun Stribling hopefully comes back by December,14 so don't panic.
But here is my answer to that. Brock Purdy is playing at an MVP level. He is, right now, the highest rated passer in the history of the National Football League.15 If you can get an MVP more playmakers to throw to, that is a great thing, full stop. And the best case is not a problem to be managed. If everybody gets healthy and you end up with a roster full of impact receivers, Evans and Jeudy and Kittle and McCaffrey all on the field at once, watch out. That offense decimates teams come January. Championships are not won by the team that kept its options open. They are won by the team that fed its quarterback while he was playing the best football of his life.
I am not going to pretend I know a deal gets done. I am not informed enough to say that, and anybody who tells you different in October is selling an online course about how to use AI to sell online courses.
What I can do is tell you whose reporting I trust between now and the November 10 deadline: Adam Schefter, Ian Rapoport, Matt Maiocco, Matt Barrows, Nick Wagoner, Tim Kawakami, David Lombardi, Jennifer Lee Chan, and Grant Cohn and a lot of other members of the 49ersphere.16 Follow them and you will know what is real when it actually becomes real.
The window is open. The quarterback is playing out of his mind. The X is limping.
Let's talk about X, baby. Then let's go get one.
